About Room 16

Room 16 is the main stream new entrant class at Kawakawa Primary. All the students are 5 years old and love coming to school and learning with Whaea Narelle, our kaiako. We are hands-on class that are learning to take responsibility for our learning and become our own teachers. We are discovering our learning skills through a process called learning through play. Have a look and see how we extend and challenge ourselves.

Things in the night sky

We have been learning about things in the night sky. We talked about how people use the stars to navigate. We talked about things that people use to help them navigate and created our own telescopes.

Water play

We have been talking about where we see maths around us. Some of us said we only see or do maths in class. The more we talked about it the more we realised that we do maths everywhere.
Here is Room 16 enjoying using measuring cups with our water play.

C is for colourful!

Room 16's sound for the week was Cc so we were exploring different things that had this sound. We decided to make colourful trees to take home. This wasn't just sound mahi but art and maths too! We had to order our shapes from biggest to smallest and use different colours. We even shared our shapes with others and helped one another.

Tegan's maths resource

In the Holidays Tegan made a new maths resource that helps people learn numbers before and after to 25. She recycled toilet rolls and drew the numbers on them and decorated them with stickers. We had to work together and talk to one another about finding the next number. We were so excited about using our friend's very own maths resource!
We got a little confused about what was 6 and what was 9!
